VICTORIAN KITCHEN EXTENSION

THE BRIEF

A Victorian home renovation in Colchester, Essex involving a single-storey rear extension and the creation of a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and family room designed for modern living. I was invited to provide interior design consultation during the planning and design stages, offering an interior design perspective on how the new extension would function for everyday family life.

THE DESIGN

Working closely with the homeowner, I reviewed the architect’s proposed layouts and floor plans, considering circulation, furniture arrangements, natural light and the relationship between the existing house and the new extension. Particular attention was given to ensuring the space felt balanced and practical, maximising daylight without over-glazing the rear elevation or compromising the warmth and character of the interior. Alongside the layout review, I advised on furniture placement, lighting and colour direction to help create a cohesive space that would work both aesthetically and functionally once completed. The completed scheme features a beautiful dual-colour deVOL kitchen, engineered herringbone flooring, Carrara quartz worktops and carefully considered architectural detailing throughout.

THE RESULT

The result is a timeless family home that balances period character with contemporary living — a space that connects seamlessly with the garden, respects the character of the original Victorian house, and feels elegant, welcoming and perfectly suited to modern family life.
