Why ‘Interior Design Masters’ Doesn’t Reflect the Reality of Interior Design
I love a good interiors show—they're fun, inspiring, and a welcome escape. Interior Design Masters with Alan Carr is no exception. Alan’s a brilliant presenter, and I truly admire Michelle Ogundehin—her style, thoughtful critiques, and commitment to sustainable design. I always look forward to seeing what she’s wearing, but even more so, I respect what she stands for.
But as an interior designer based in North Essex, working with real clients, real timelines, and real budgets, I often feel uneasy about how interior design is sometimes portrayed on TV.
It’s More About Looks Than Lasting Impact
As another designer once said, the show might be more accurately named Interior Creative Masters. And they have a point. TV television rarely reflect the day-to-day reality of a professional interior designer in the UK. Timelines are rushed and budgets are limited. Materials are often chosen for speed and appearance rather than durability or sustainability. The result? Viewers are left thinking interior design is quick, fun, and inexpensive. But in reality, good design takes time, expertise, and thoughtful planning. It’s not just about making things look nice—it’s about creating homes that function beautifully, feel right, and last.

The True Role of an Interior Designer
When people ask, “What does an interior designer actually do?” the answer is: a lot more than most realise.
We don’t just fluff cushions and pick colours (though we love those bits too). We:
• Plan layouts that improve how you live
• Source quality, lasting materials and furnishings
• Manage timelines, budgets, and suppliers
• Create detailed mood boards and full design packs
• Navigate building regulations and technical constraints
• Act as the bridge between contractors, trades, and homeowners
• Help you make decisions that are emotional, financial, and often life-changing
We help you save time, reduce costs, and take the overwhelm out of the process—while often increasing the value of your property.
Achieving this requires time, experience, and collaboration with multiple specialists—none of which can be squeezed into a tidy 60-minute programme.
Why Renovations And Design Can Sometimes Cost More Than You Think
Many of my clients save for years to renovate their homes properly. And since COVID, the cost of building work, furniture, and materials in the UK has increased significantly. Think about clothing—buying a well-made jumper costs more these days, just like everything else. The same principle applies to interiors. You can buy cheap and cheerful—but it’s often mass-produced, short-lived, and not built with the environment (or your future) in mind. Investing in good design means fewer costly mistakes, better longevity, and a home you won’t want to change every few years.
Not All TV Misrepresents Interior Design
While some shows simplify or glamorise the process, there are others that get closer to the truth. Documentaries that follow architects or self-builders often highlight the real decisions, delays, compromises, and emotional ups and downs of transforming a home. These are more honest and, in my view, more helpful for anyone embarking on their own renovation journey.

Looking for an Interior Designer Who Truly Cares?
If you’re searching for a designer who believes in doing it right, not rushing it—please do send me an email at House of Lexden. I work closely with every client to understand their story, lifestyle, and long-term needs. I believe great design starts with clear planning, realistic budgeting, and thoughtful detailing—long before the beautiful photos at the end. Interior design is a serious business. It helps clients set practical budgets, plan for contingencies because yes—unexpected things always crop up when building starts and select finishes.
Final Thoughts
Interior design isn’t just about surface beauty. It’s about shaping a space that supports your well-being, brings daily joy, and tells your story. So next time someone says, “Can’t we just do it in a week like on TV?”, I’ll smile—and gently explain why your home deserves more time, care, and intention.
